According to Fabrizio Romano, Martin Odegaard has agreed to join Arsenal over Real Sociedad. The announcement of the same is set to happen in the coming hours.
A newspaper in San Sebastian, El Confidencial, has also confirmed that Real Sociedad have lost the opportunity to sign Odegaard.
The reports also indicate that Real Sociedad wanted a deal that would see the Norwegian move permanently. Arsenal opted for a loan deal instead, making it possible to agree on terms with Ream Madrid.
The 22-year-old had a successful loan run at Real Sociedad. Imanol Alguacil, therefore, hoped that he would stay at the club.
Odegaard is reportedly unhappy at Real Madrid for lack of playing time for the Spanish Giants. From reports, the playmaker asked to leave the club before the end of the January transfer window.
Real Madrid included a no purchase option for Martin Odegaard in the loan deal since they still want to keep him at the club.
According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal’s technical director, Edu Gaspar, started the negotiations to sign the Norwegian on loan last week.
Arsenal has a good relationship with the Spanish giants, a relationship built by their agreement in Dani Ceballo’s loan deal.
With the recent offloading of players at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta confirmed that the club is in the process of reinforcing the squad. The club let go of Sead Kolasinac, Mesut Ozil and Sokratis Papastathopoulos this month.
‘We are in that process right now. We’ve done the first part [offloading players] more or less and now we are focusing on the second phase,’ said the Arsenal manager.
‘Obviously, this market and the context makes it difficult but we are looking at options and we will see what we can do.
‘We are looking at various positions because the movements that we’ve made in this transfer window with some players leaving the club leaves us a little bit short in certain areas.
‘If we can then we will do it if we can’t then we will just keep going with what we have.’
