Mercedes to launch their 2021 Formula 1 Car

Mercedes have officially set a date for the launch of their 2021 season Formula 1 car to March 2.

Mercedes won last year’s Formula 1’s championship and are looking for an eighth successive championship.

Lewis Hamilton Mercedes’s no one driver led a successful defence of the F1 title and made history by matching the legend Michael Schumacher to the 7th title in F1. He will be looking to break the record with an 8th title to his name with the new 2021 car.

The car will be known as the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance which will follow from the previous car from the 2014 season’s W5 and to last year’s W11. According to Mercedes, the new product will retain the black theme from last year.

Despite announcing the car Mercedes are yet to tie down Lewis Hamilton to a contract after his contract expired in December 2020.

Mercedes are said to be in negotiations with Lewis Hamilton to sign a deal and become their number one driver and partner teammate Valtteri Bottas for a fifth season.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is confident of Lewis signing and wants to complete it before pre-season testing.

Mercedes will be the car to beat in this season due to an overhaul of new F1 rules that apply to it. They will, however, take effect from 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the rules in 2021 will be very different from those in 2020. Some fundamental changes to the cars will have to apply. They include:

  • Removal of a rear part of the floor
  • Reduction in size of the little fins and flicks on the brake ducts
  • Shortened fences underneath the diffusers
  • Removal of venetian blind-like slots at the front of the floor.

These changes will apply to reduce the stress the tyres undergo due to the high speeds the car moves.

According to James Allison, Mercedes will have a significant impact on the speed of the cars.
