The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has named Barcelona’s Lionel Messi the best male footballer of the decade.
Debates have raged in the social media and the media in general over who is the best player between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi made his debut for Barcelona in 2004 and has had an eventful and successful career. He has made 757 appearances for Barca scoring 651 goals in all competitions.
Cristiano Ronaldo, on the other hand, has also achieved much in his sporting career. The Portuguese player has played for some of the most successful clubs in the football history. They include Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.
IFFHS named Messi player of the decade with Ronaldo coming second. Other players included in the top 5 include, Andreas Iniesta who came third, Neymar in fourth place and finally Sergio Ramos.
Both Ronaldo and Lionel Messi linked with moves away
Ronaldo moved to Juventus from Real Madrid with a club-record fee of €100 million and has since played an integral part in the club’s performance.
He has made 113 appearances for Juventus and scored 88 goals in all competitions. The superstar was linked with a move away from the club a few months back.
The 36-year-old was linked with a move to both Paris Saint Germain and Manchester United. A return to United looks possible for the Portuguese international.
Messi announced his plans to move away from Barca, a decision which failed to materialize. His contract with Barcelona will expire this season, meaning, he will be free to leave on a free transfer.
The 33-year-old is linked with a move to PSG and Manchester City. Manchester City are the favourites since Messi will be pleased to reunite with his former coach Pep Guardiola.
The two superstars last faced each other in the UEFA Champions League group stages.
