Liverpool are keeping their options on the table for a new centre-back this summer, with RB Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konate and loan signing Ozan Kabak both appearing on a five-man target list.
The Reds have been plagued by defensive injuries throughout the season, but they are expecting to be well-stocked at the back for the 2021/22 season.
Liverpool’s interest in Konate has long been established, but talks about a move have reportedly ‘advanced’ in past weeks.
The deal of the France under-21 international includes a £34 million release clause, and the Reds have been keeping track on his success in recent years.
Liverpool are hoping to get a better deal for Konate, who has been plagued by injury this season, missing both legs of the Reds’ Champions League last-16 clash.
Kabak appeared in both games, and Liverpool have agreed to a £18 million option to make his loan from Schalke permanent at the end of the season.
The Turkish player has been impressive in recent games, and he now has the remainder of the season to persuade club management enough to secure a permanent transfer.
Injury has kept Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip out of the lineup, and none of the centre back trio is expected to return this season.
With Van Dijk, Gomez, and Matip all set to return for the 2021/22 season, Konate will essentially be seen as an alternative to Kabak if Liverpool decide to go ahead with a move for the Frenchman.
The Reds are also interested in Brighton defender Ben White, who benefits from his role as a homegrown player.
