Leicester City are planning to tie Youri Tielemans to a new long-term deal, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato. The Foxes will have to move quickly to sign the 24-year-old playmaker, as Barcelona and Liverpool are both interested in signing him in the summer transfer window.
Tielemans joined Leicester City in January 2019 from AS Monaco and has since established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. The Belgian international was initially signed on loan by the Foxes, but the transfer was made permanent the following summer, and he has since become an important part of Brendan Rodgers’ squad.
Tielemans has made 107 appearances for Leicester, scoring 17 goals and providing 19 assists. Indeed, his influence at the King Power Stadium has been so important that the former Premier League champions are eager to sign the 24-year-old playmaker to a new contract. Meanwhile, Barcelona and Liverpool are also interested in signing the player.
Barcelona are in a time of transformation, which will begin this summer with a squad overhaul. With Riqui Puig struggling for playing time, Philippe Coutinho considered surplus to requirements, Miralem Pjanic failing to make an impact this season, and Sergio Busquets not getting any younger, the midfield is expected to be overhauled as part of the aforementioned overhaul.
To that end, the Blaugrana have been linked with a number of midfielders, including Jorginho, Ryan Gravenberch, and others, with Tielemans also a possibility. Liverpool, on the other hand, is on the lookout for a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, whose contract expires this summer.
With negotiations set to take place after the season, Leicester will expect to secure the 24-year-old midfielder’s long-term future. What remains to be seen is if Barcelona or Liverpool will be able to sway Tielemans’ opinion or whether he will remain at the King Power Stadium.
