Mikel Arteta stated after Arsenal’s final-day victory over Brighton on Sunday that the club is in negotiations to sign Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid this summer.

After the 2-0 win, the Spanish boss spoke to the press and was adamant that talks will take place between Arsenal and the Madrid-based giants once the transfer window reopens.

Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe netted twice yesterday, but victories by Tottenham and West Ham mean the Gunners will miss out on European competition next season.

That may have an effect on Odegaard’s desire to return to the club, but it will not prevent the Gunners from engaging with his parent club.

Arteta told the Daily Express:

“We have a very clear and strong opinion on what we’d like to do.

“He’s not our player, we will have discussions in the next few weeks. We respect he’s a Real Madrid player and will have those communications.”

While his numbers at Arsenal were not fantastic, the 22-year-old is regarded as a player with a lot of promise.

Despite scoring a memorable goal against Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium, he only managed two goals and two assists in 20 appearances.
