Barcelona’s contract renewal drama with winger Ousmane Dembele continues to take unexpected turns. The Frenchman’s recent lack of commitment on his future has sparked much debate within the Blaugrana circle about his future.
Many believe Dembele has already played his final game for Barcelona, despite the large number of suitors for the 24-year-old and the club’s apparently endless list of financial woes, but that is not the case, according to sources from TV3.
Since joining Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, Dembele has had his greatest season in terms of fitness and output. Despite this, he has fallen well short of repaying the club’s financial and sporting faith in him. Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, both in Italy, are said to be interested in signing him.
The twist, as previously reported, was that Dembele would stay with the Catalans until the conclusion of his current contract, which expires in 2022, and then leave on a free transfer. Given the amount of money they have put in him and their current financial predicament, that would be a nightmare for Barcelona.
Given his strong season, a sale could help him recoup some of his losses. Furthermore, the expected arrival of Memphis Depay, who, according to the rumor, will be confirmed after Holland’s next Euro matchday, will force Barcelona to free up cash and space in the attack.
Dembele, who is also representing France at the Euros, has declared that he would concentrate on the competition with Les Bleus for the time being, after which the renewal negotiations may resume. However, as Barcelona’s patience wears thin, the idea of the winger’s exit becomes more likely.
