Despite his injury problems and the addition of Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool fans believe the club should keep Joel Matip next season.

After joining on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016, Matip has shown to be a superb signing for the club, assisting the Reds win both the Champions League and the Premier League.

Last season, long-term injuries to both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez gave Matip the chance to take over as Liverpool’s temporary first-choice centre-back, but the 29-year-old was also injured for most of the season.

The defender’s injury woes remain a cause for concern, and Liverpool bolstered their ranks by signing Konate from RB Leipzig for £35 million.

In the centre-back position, Konate will join Gomez, Matip, and Van Dijk, as well as Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams, and many supporters expect those numbers to be reduced in the summer.

Liverpool fans believe Matip should not be sold despite his fitness problems.

The ECHO asked fans on Twitter: “After the signing of Ibrahima Konate and Nat Phillips’ resurgence, what should Liverpool do with Joel Matip this summer?”

The defender’s services should be retained, according to 59% of the 3,071 respondents.

Liverpool would be better off allowing Matip to depart in the summer, according to 41% of respondents.

Matip was making progress since returning from injury in April, but he was unable to feature in any of Liverpool’s final games, as the Reds finished third.

The Cameroonian has been allocated to a specialized rehabilitation routine in order to help him avoid the nagging injuries that have dogged his Liverpool career.

Matip, along with Gomez and Van Dijk, will be available for the entire preseason, according to Jurgen Klopp.
