Celtic are expected to suffer a summer transfer setback after losing out to Lazio in the chase for Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapié.

Hincapié has attracted the attention of a number of European suitors while representing his country at Copa America.

Mundo Deportivo reported earlier this week that Celtic are one of the clubs keeping close tabs on Hincapié.

In this year’s Copa America, the youthful prospect has started all three of Ecuador’s matches, putting on dazzling performances in the process.

Hincapié drew attention for his outstanding performance in Ecuador’s 1-1 draw with South American giants Brazil, a display that caught the eyes of potential suitors.

However, it appears that Ange Postecoglou’s team will be forced to divert their focus elsewhere.

According to Argentinian reports, the president of Hincapié’s parent club Talleres, Andrès Fassi, has been in ‘close talks’ with an undisclosed Serie A side, according to Lazio fan account LazioLand (@Lazio Land).

Argentinian media outlets believe the club in question is Lazio, despite the fact that this has not been confirmed.

According to the Daily Record, Atlético Talleres are looking for £3.5 million from any potential buyer for the 19-year-old.
