Liverpool’s sporting director Michael Edwards is set to step down

Liverpool supporters have reacted to reports that sporting director Michael Edwards may depart the club at the end of the season.

According to David Ornstein of the Athletic, recent reports suggest that Edwards will step down from his role after this campaign.

Edwards told FSG of his plan to quit, but “the matter has not yet been finalized.”

For the time being, it’s unclear whether it was also an advanced exercise in succession planning on the part of the team’s owners, FSG. However, Liverpool will want to retain the services of Edwards at all costs.

During his time with the Reds, Edwards has developed a very tight working connection with boss Jurgen Klopp.

Fans on social media have responded to today’s developments by voicing their worries.

Lewis Bower posted: “I doubt this isn’t something that has come out of the blue and it’s a safe bet Liverpool will be fine. But it is a bit of a shock. He’s done great things with us.

“You could even argue a refresh might be beneficial at this point?

“Of course, there is no point in hiding the fact that Michael Edwards has been a huge staple in Liverpool’s success in the last three years. The same structure has been in place for a while.”

LFCZA commented: “I know there are a few dissenting voices about Edwards. There is however no doubt in my mind that he has setup one of the best data analysis departments in English Football and wheeling and dealing (albeit hit and miss at times) has benefited us considerably.

“Him leaving will be a huge loss but hope that the club retains the team he has working in the background.”

Zubin Daver said: “He is as important to the team as Klopp is. Sort it out please #LFC!”

LFC Kev wrote: “Why are people upset Michael Edwards is stepping down?

“Our main players have just signed new contracts – it’s not like we’ll need to sign anyone for 5 years anyway”.
