Newcastle loan bid for Barcelona defender rejected

Newcastle has had a loan bid for Barcelona centre back Clement Lenglet rejected, according to the French website Jeunes Footeux. According to the report, the offer contained a long-term £16 million deal for the France international.

This season, Lenglet, 26, has been on the periphery at Barcelona. The left-footed defender joined Barcelona from Sevilla in 2018 and has since made a total of 148 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Lenglet fits into the kind of high-earning marginal players that Barcelona is eager to get rid of. Philippe Coutinho has gone on loan to Aston Villa, and Samuel Umtiti has agreed to a lower wage.

Newcastle are in urgent need of a defender, and Sven Botman, Benoit Badiashile, and Diego Carlos have all been mentioned. However, they appear to be investigating other choices, including Lenglet.

They are still interested in signing the 15-time France ace, who was first connected with the club in December. Newcastle has made a loan offer with an obligatory £16 million purchase, according to Jeunes Footeux, but it has been declined.
Even if he does not make the squad, Lenglet remains an important member of Xavi’s team. However, as we enter the second half of the season, Lenglet is expected to seek reassurance during the next two weeks.

The likelihood is that he will remain a supporting player, which could tempt Lenglet to contemplate a move.
