West Ham hopes of keeping Areola dealt major blow last night

What happened last night dealt a serious blow to West Ham United’s chances of maintaining the 6ft 5in player who is a popular fan favorite.

Alphonse Areola, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, has been a tremendous success at West Ham this season.

West Ham stated they hold first option on Areola when he joined in July, and Hammers fans are anxious to see him signed permanently.

The goalie has been instrumental in West Ham’s progression to the Europa League semi-finals.

As the Hammers sat on their advantage last week, he made a magnificent save in Lyon to prevent the hosts from gaining any hope.

However, for Premier League games, the 29-year-old has been obliged to fill in for number one, Lukasz Fabianski.

And Fabianski, who just turned 37, was recently offered a new one-year contract that will keep him working until he turns 38.

Given that David Moyes has made it clear that Areola is his number two goalkeeper, it might spell doom for West Ham’s ambitions to retain the 29-year-old next season.
