AC Milan have completed the signing of Sven Botman from Lille on a £25.5m deal from Lille.
The highly rated defender has been a recent target for English Premier League clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
The 22-year-old is seen as one of the best central defenders in European football after joining Lille in 2020 from Dutch club Ajax. He played an integral part in helping Lille clinch the Ligue 1 title in his first season with the French side.
Lille are struggling in the Frech top flight league, placed in mid table with a chance to play in the European competitions next season still in sight.
Reports, however, state the central defender rejected Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United’s offers in favour of the Milan-based outfit as they seek to gain firm footing in the UEFA Champions League next campaign.
Both Spurs and Newcastle have registered a season of mixed results in the Premier League. Antonio Conte has eventually played his cards and secured a spot for Spurs in European football next season.
Botman would have been a major signing for the London-based team ahead of their new busy season.
On the other hand, with new wealthy owners, Eddie Howe is equally looking for ways to reinforce his Newcastle United squad after saving the Magpies from relegation this summer, and Botman’s signing would have been a major boost for the club.
