Sky Sports: West Ham “close to agreeing” first deadline day deal

West Ham United are nearing an agreement to bring Jan Bednarek to the London Stadium as the team’s first recruit on deadline day.

According to Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports, David Moyes is nearing an agreement to send the Southampton centre back on a season-long loan to east London.

Meanwhile, Craig Dawson appears to be leaving the club, with Wolves reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign the 32-year-old.

In his tweet, Sheth said: “Wolves in advanced talks to sign West Ham United defender Craig Dawson. “West Ham are close to agreeing a loan deal for Southampton defender Jan Bednarek.”

It is easy to understand why Moyes chose Bednarek, a reliable, dangerous centre back with experience of playing in the Premier League, to replace the departing Dawson, since the 26-year-old appears to be exactly the kind of defender the 59-year-old manager prefers.

In fact, during the period of Bednarek’s 31 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, the £25.5 million prospect was in imperious form, contributing to Southampton’s seven clean sheets, making 2.3 interceptions, one tackle, 4.5 clearances, and winning 4.5 duels-with a success rate of 62% per game.
