Everton’s poor run in the EPL continues, and the Toffees are now in the bottom half of the EPL table after a goalless draw with Spurs at home yesterday. In a game that saw Spurs extend their longest undefeated run at Goodison Park in the EPL, Everton’s midfield didn’t impress.
Coming in for Allan in the 82nd minute, center back Mason Holgate couldn’t keep up and after a number of mistakes costing his team, was sent off ten minutes later for an infringement.
Coach Rafa Benitez had to replace Allan, and chose the 25-year old Englishman over Delph and Gbamin, but the red card saw Gbamin play in the final few minutes. Before that, though, Holgate’s slow pace almost handed Tottenham a goal.
Rafa thinks the Englishman didn’t meet expectation because the pace of the game was too much for him, who wasn’t playing in his normal defending position. “…he is good in the air and can pass the ball, but the tempo was very high, so maybe that is why he was late to some of the balls,” reasoned Benitez.
Though the 25-year old had played in that position before, it’s clear he cannot hold on against tougher opponents and Rafa will have to get another solution for his midfield problems, seeing as Fabian Delph could be unfit after ten weeks out.
