According to Football Insider, Celtic boss Gavin Strachan has turned down an invitation to take over as manager of Hartlepool United.

Following the resignation of Dave Challinor, the 42-year-old became odds-on favourite to take over the League Two team.

But, according to a Celtic source, Strachan is no longer in the race to return to the team where he spent four years as a player.

He has chosen to remain as first-team coach at Celtic, a role he has served for the past 18 months.

That’s great news for manager Ange Postecoglou, who has gushed about Strachan’s influence behind the scenes.

When Postecoglou was appointed in the summer, there was a call for Strachan and John Kennedy to go.

Celtic, on the other hand, preferred to maintain consistency in their coaching ranks rather than allow the Australian to bring in his own team.

Strachan has previously managed at EFL clubs Peterborough United and Doncaster Rovers, and is the son of Parkhead legend and former manager Gordon.

On both occasions, he was Darren Ferguson’s assistant, although he left Posh 18 months ago to join Celtic’s coaching team under Neil Lennon.

He has never had a top position at a professional team, though he did manage Ilkeston Town in the non-league in 2015.
