Celtic have made five transfer signings this summer but you get the feeling there is much more to come.
Hoops fans have been craving a ‘statement signing’ from Brendan Rodgers and a number of big names have been linked with the club. One of those is out-of-favour Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.
The former Ajax star is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer after a difficult three seasons and speculation has seen him touted with a loan move to Parkhead.
The £35million Netherlands midfielder still has two years left to run on his deal and refused to rule out a move to Scotland after scoring in a Murrayfield friendly earlier this month. He said: “I’ve been linked with so many clubs. I don’t know. Everything is open. Let’s see about my future. I’m coming back from injury now and I’ve trained for a few weeks.
“I’m fit and I need to keep going. I will push as hard as possible. For now it’s hard to say where my future is. “I’m fit, I’ve trained for a few weeks. Anything can happen, so it’s hard to say where my future will be. In football you never know. It’s also a possibility I move.”
However, the Hoops are overloaded with central midfield options – with NINE players competing for starts in the middle of the park – and a deal for Van de Beek seems a long way off.
It was reported yesterday that La Liga side Real Sociedad are locked in talks with United over a season-long loan move for the 26-year-old, which would include an £8million option to-buy clause. And that could put an end to all speculation linking him with a move to Glasgow’s east end.
Elsewhere, Dominik Livakovic is the name on the lips of every Celtic fan at the minute. The Dinamo Zagreb goalkeeper is poised to move on this summer and it’s understood Celtic have been keeping tabs on the Croatia No1.
Livakovic was widely expected to complete an £8m move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce but the proposed transfer has hit the skids.
Celts have yet to make any official offer for the 28-year-old, who would certainly fit the bill as a marquee signing, and it’s being reported that Spanish side UD Almeria have lodged an enquiry for the star, who is out of contract next summer.
Meanwhile one-time Hoops wonderkid Karamoko Dembele could make a shock move to Blackburn Rovers this summer.
The pint-sized attacker, 20, left Parkhead for Ligue 1 side Brest last summer but has struggled to make his mark in France – racking up just 15 appearances from the bench.
It’s said that English Championship side Rovers are monitoring his situation but have yet to firm up their interest with an official offer. The London-born starlet had been tipped for stardom after breaking into the Celtic under-20s aged just 13, but he has so far failed to live up to his potential.
Finally, flop goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas has signed a permanent deal with FC Utrecht. The Greek goalie ripped up his contract at Parkhead earlier this summer – despite having a year left to run – after a disastrous three years in Glasgow.
Celtic shelled out £4.5m to sign Barkas from AEK Athens in 2020 but he proved to be a vulnerability between the sticks.
Barkas spent last season on loan with Utrecht, earning the plaudits for his form, and now the 29-year-old has returned to the Dutch side on a two-year deal.
