After commencing negotiations with Swansea City over an £8 million deal, Crystal Palace is set to sign Flynn Downes ahead of Premier League rivals Southampton and Wolves, according to the Daily Mail.

The former England U20 international was the centre of attention on Tuesday as Russell Martin’s Swans intensified preseason training.

And as was to be expected, Downes was noticeably absent during the preseason game against Colchester United.

Wales Online reports that Downes is valued at £12 million by the South Wales organisation. Despite competing interest from Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace are hoping to conclude a deal for closer to £8 million and have since emerged as the clear frontrunners.

Crystal Palace are now in contact with Downes. The Eagles sought and failed to sign him back in 2020 when Ipswich Town turned down a reasonable bid from the Premier League club.

“Flynn’s been absolutely unbelievable since he signed,” says Swans skipper Matt Grimes.

“I think he’s been first class. His attitude he brings to training everyday… he’s a top, top player. If his dedication and work ethic is anything to go by, I think he can go right to the top.”
