When Jermain Defoe appeared on Sky Sports to analyze two EPL matches on Sunday, many football fans around the world had no idea what was happening.

The 39-year old English striker extended his contract at Scottish side rangers just a few months ago, so, him appearing as a pundit, that too in England, was unexpected.

Reacting to the incident, former Celtic hitman, Frank McAvennie stated that Defoe is unlikely to play for the Gers again. “I would think so,” McAvennie answered when he was asked whether the striker had played his last game for Gerrard’s side.

Further, Frank divulged that Defoe had his club’s go ahead before opting for punditry rather than be on the field, where he hasn’t appeared since July. “…he’s obviously done his pundit stuff with the blessing of the club. …no way Gerrard didn’t sign off,” he assured.

Jermain currently holds a player-coach position at Rangers, and Frank feels that the former is more suited for coaching that analyzing. “…the focus is on coaching for him…he will make a great coach when the time comes.” Frank said, after observing that Defoe didn’t contribute much on Sunday.

With 44 appearances and 21 goals for Gerrard’s side, Defoe last appeared for Rangers in July, playing just a few minutes.

Seeing as he hasn’t played since then and is now trying to branch out, McAvennie could be right and the former Spurs man might have retired from playing.
