Everton manager Rafa Benitez believes that young talent Moise Kean will learn from his send off during the Carabao Cup clash with Championship side Huddersfield Town
Andros Townsend fired the Toffees into the next round after they overcame the 59th minute straight red card shown to Kean to claim a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Everton made 9 changes to the 11 that drew with Leeds in their last Premier League outing.
The Toffees drew first blood through Alex Iwobi before the goal was cancelled out by Huddersfield’s Tom Lee.
Kean had his goal disallowed for offside in the first half and let his frustrations get the better of him in an off the ball incident with Duane Holmes.
striker appeared to shove Holmes in the neck after the pair had clashed off the ball moments earlier.
Referee Matthew Donohue needed no time to make up his mind and showed Kean a straight red after just less than an hour played at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Huddersfield who had made 6 changes to their squad also had a goal questionably disallowed for offside in the second half and were unable to come back after they found themselves trailing for the second time in the match.
New signing Andros Townsend prevented a cup upset, as his first goal for the club got Everton to the next round.
Speaking after the match, Rafa Benitez had this to say on Moise Kean’s red card: “He is a young player and has to learn from it.
“The reaction from the players was great and you could see the reaction from the fans.”
Everton will be looking to repeat previous cup success, as they have made it to the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup in the last two competitions.
