Even in the muddy waters and urgent need for Rafa Benitez’s replacement, Everton seem keen on certain qualifications and won’t settle for less.
According to The Telegraph, Everton’s final list of three for the new manager included former Juventus centre-back Fabio Cannavaro, but the Liverpool Echo differs, clarifying that the Italian is currently not a prospect.
The report suggests that the 48-year old is “not good enough” to succeed Rafa Benitez, revealing that the Toffees are instead still hanging on to the likes of Rooney and Lampard, among other big names.
Cannavaro, who coached Guangzhou and other Asian clubs, has no Premier League experience and could have perhaps raised eyebrows if he was chosen over the other names. The current interim manager, Ferguson, reportedly wants a longer contract and could take over as the new boss.
The fact that Fabio was wanted by Poland (though he declined the offer) as their national team coach, speaks volumes about his capability. However, Everton seem convinced that others, especially Rooney, will do a greater job at Goodison Park, as the Toffees have distanced themselves from any more talks with the Italian, according to reports.
The Liverpool-based side is still in talks with various interests, though, and before everything is on paper, anyone with the needed expertise and profile is still very much in the race.
