Just three days after Frank Lampard’s glorious debut at Everton, the Toffees succumbed to Newcastle away from home to hand the former Chelsea coach his first defeat and send them further towards a relegation battle.
Despite dominating in possession at St James’ Park yesterday, Lampard’s men couldn’t maximize as their consolation came from an own goal while the Magpies netted thrice to sit 17th on the table.
Speaking to BT Sport after the defeat, Frank Lampard admitted that his side wasn’t confident enough which is humiliating. “Of course the players’ confidence levels are low-it smacks you in the face,” he lamented.
The Blues have no single win in the last five EPL games and the ex-Derby County coach admits that their defeat at Newcastle was subject to criticism, but he won’t give up and will work it out.
“The only thing to do is work hard and look forward…this result puts it into sharp focus, but we must build that confidence,” he stated.
Admitting that their road ahead is tough, the 43-year old is determined not to let their recent loss faze his side and instead wants to handle each challenge as it comes, starting with their Saturday home match against Leeds.
“The only focus is…to reproduce the way we played against Brentford…and take every game and take every game step by step,” Lampard said. Hopefully, he can get The Toffees up and running to escape a first return to Championship in seventy years.
