Former Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan, has stated that Rangers head coach Steven Gerrard needs to manage Steven Davis’ minutes on the pitch considering his age, after what he termed as Davis’ worst display in a Rangers shirt.
Davis was subbed out after the hour mark for Stephen Wright during last night’s 2-0 Europa League defeat to Lyon as he struggled against top-class opponents.
Speaking after the match, Whelan had this to say on the veteran midfielder.
“Steven Davis is a Rangers legend and was incredible last season, absolutely outstanding as they won the league,”
“He will go down as a great player for the club but he is 36 and you can’t play every minute of every game at that age – not in midfield.
“It’s okay for a goalkeeper like McGregor, but playing in midfield against top sides like Lyon is completely different.
“Steven Gerrard will know he has to manage Davis’ game time carefully and I think that’s what he will do.
“He will know he was below par against Lyon, probably his worst display in a Rangers shirt, but he also knows what he needs to do to get his body right and get back to the level.”
The 36-year-old has made has featured in 10 games for Rangers across all competitions this season, playing 90 minutes in all 5 league matches played.
He has made 320 appearances for Rangers across two spells.
