Mateusz Klich told BBC Radio Leeds that he misses playing in his favorite position, but he says that he is really happy with his new role at Leeds United.
Klich had spent much of Marcelo Bielsa’s time at Elland Road as the number eight or number ten. And it had turned around his career after Thomas Christiansen had written him off.
Surprisingly, when he did appear under Christiansen, he was usually deployed a little deeper. And it appeared that the role did not suit the Poland international – though this could be due in part to the infrequency with which he was given opportunities.
Klich has been utilized in the double-pivot alongside Robin Koch, Adam Forshaw, and Kalvin Phillips, with Marsch at the helm. And he’s had some success in his new role.
When Klich was asked if he wanted to be utilized more defensively, he said yes. While he stated that he prefers to be buzzing around the pitch, he also stated that he enjoys his current role.
“Yeah [I play more defensively]. Play a bit different, a bit more behind,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.
“I play a bit more like a holding midfielder rather than running around everywhere like I wanted to. But I quite enjoy it. I get loads of the ball and I try and transport the ball to our offensive players.”
