Xherdan Shaqiri has made it one step closer to leaving Liverpool as the bid accepted by Lyon for $9.5 million has been revealed.

A 29-year-old who joined the club in the summer of 2018 from Stoke City has played a substantial role in guiding Liverpool achieve a Premier League and Champions League triumph this season.

He’s at the top of his game and has just finished representing Switzerland at the European Championship where they reached the Quarter-Finals.

Following the original £4 million bid by Lyon, it’s anticipated that Shaqiri would sign with Ligue 1 side once a medical has been completed.

While he has established himself as a goal-scorer on Merseyside, Shaquiri had a difficult time breaking into Klopp’s starting eleven. Now Diogo Jota has joined the team, he’s on fire alongside Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.

If the transfer is completed, then Liverpool will be thrilled as they spent $12 million to get him to Anfield. When it comes to their respective contributions, Klopp will be assessing how much Shaqiri helped Liverpool win the UEFA Super Cup over what would be a £2.5 million loss on transfer money.

A statement was released on Lyon’s official website to inform supporters about the news:

“Olympique Lyonnais is pleased to have finally reached an agreement in principle with Liverpool for the transfer of the Swiss international midfielder, Xherdan Shaqiri, who was a key figure for his country at this summer’s European Championship. After intense negotiations with Liverpool, OL thanks the General Manager, Billy Hogan, and the Sporting Director, Michael Edwards, for their availability and for listening to the joint requests of Xherdan Shaqiri and Olympique Lyonnais.”
