According to Mundo Deportivo journalist Francesc Aguilar, Manchester United has gone ahead of Liverpool in the hunt to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez this summer.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid began talks earlier this month about a swap move for Saul, which may see Antoine Griezmann return to his previous club.
The transfer, however, has not gone as anticipated. Griezmann is worth more to the Blaugrana than Saul, so they want extra money added to the transaction.
This has hampered the talks between the teams, and Jonathan Barnett, Saul’s agent, is now said to be in advanced talks with United.
Pogba may sign a new long-term contract, but Man Utd still require additional talent in the center of the pitch if they are to genuinely fight for the Premier League title.
Last year, it was reported that Saul would not be sold for less than the €150m buy-out option in his long deal.
After acquiring De Paul, it’s been reported that Atletico could accept as little as €40 million for the 26-year-old Real Madrid graduate.
