Manchester United have agreed to a fee of £41m with add-ons for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane. The deal is subject to a medical.
United are having an eventful transfer, having successfully completed the signing of Jadon Sancho for £73m from Borussia Dortmund.
The signings are a statement of intent from Manchester United going into the new season.
Varane is one of the best centre-backs in the world with his accomplishments spanning from the world cup to the Spanish la Liga titles.
He joined Real Madrid from the French side of Lens in 2011 and has gone to make over 350 appearances for the club.
He was in the world cup winning squad in 2018 and recently in the Euro 2020 France team that was knocked out on penalties.
Varane will be a big improvement on the United squad. His partnership with Maguire is already sparking debate on which will be the best Centre back partnership in the premier league.
The addition of Varane and Sancho on the squad is also a statement from the board and the Glazers after the backlash they faced last season.
Manchester United fans were frustrated about their team’s lack of competitiveness with losses in the Europa finals and lack of significant trophies for the last four seasons.
Varane unveiling as Manchester United according to Fabrizio Romano will be done next week due to quarantine rules.
However, he will fly to Manchester this week but will undergo his medical a few days later.
Real Madrid had offered Varane a new deal with captaincy included but had his mind already set on the premier league.
He wanted the premier league experience and also had his mindset on Manchester United. Real Madrid also wanted to cash in on Varane as he was on his last year on contract and they were set to lose him as a free agent.
