According to 90min, Matt Targett of Aston Villa is expected to join Newcastle United on the final day of the transfer window.

It would be understandable if Newcastle paid a transfer fee and acquired the Villa 26-year-old outright.

Targett, who was recently displaced from Villa’s starting XI by January acquisition Lucas Digne, appears to be on his way to St James’ Park on a season-long loan.

Agents for the £11 million Villa player (Sky Sports) were in Tyneside on Sunday to finalize a deal, and he will have his physical on deadline day.

If Targett leaves, it boosts Eddie Howe’s defensive line and gives them much-needed experience in their relegation fight.

However, Villa would be left without a true back-up to Digne if this happened.

This season, Ashley Young has started at left-back, although Kortney Hause can also play there if necessary.

With the move appearing to be imminent, it appears that everyone will find out when the 2021/22 Premier League season approaches its most critical period.

It also has to be mentioned that this is likely to be the end of Targett’s stay in the Midlands, assuming Steven Gerrard is willing to let him go without a fight.

When things become real in the summer and he completely overhauls the squad, he’s unlikely to include him in his long-term plans.
