Merseyside club make move to sign Rangers star

Sources have informed Football Insider that Tranmere Rovers are keen to bring in Rangers ace Alex Lowry on a season-long loan for 2023-24.

The 20-year-old was the target of loan bids from Kilmarnock and FC Twente in January, which Rangers rejected, as Football Insider reported in February.

However, they may now let Lowry go as he is unlikely to feature much for the Rangers first team in the upcoming season.

Tranmere are looking for loan deals for forwards for the season.

The offensive midfielder only played seven times for the senior team in all competitions last season, totalling 99 minutes on the pitch.

He was outstanding for the Rangers’ B team, scoring 10 goals and setting up one more in 11 games in the Highland League.

But he failed to live up to the expectations after he made his senior debut in January 2022 against Stirling Albion in the Scottish Cup.

The young talent could now seek his first loan spell to impress Rangers manager Michael Beale.

Lowry’s contract with Rangers runs until June 2025.

Rangers have already signed seven new players this summer before the Scottish Premiership starts on 5 August, making it harder for Lowry to get a chance.

Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers, Dujon Sterling, Kieran Dowell, Jack Butland, Leon Balogun and Abdullah Sima have all arrived at Ibrox.

Tranmere will compete in League Two again next season after finishing 12th in 2022-23.
