Despite both being sought for Olympic service, Liverpool intends to have Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate available for the whole of their pre-season schedule.

The Reds have turned down a request from Egypt to release Salah as one of two over-age footballers in their squad for the men’s football tournament in Japan, which runs from July 22 to August 7.

Meanwhile, France could rely on Reds’s new £36 million signing Konate, who has previously worked with France’s under-21 team under French coach Sylvain Ripoll.

The Reds are already aware that attacker Takumi Minamino would not play after being left out of the hosts’ 18-man team released on Monday.

According to FIFA rules, clubs are not obligated to release their players for the Olympics, which are held outside of the international match calendar and would cause players to miss a large portion of their pre-season with their teams.

Liverpool has made it clear to the relevant federations that none of its players will be participating in the competition.

Despite the fact that Liverpool are already anxious that Salah, along with Sadio Mane and Naby Keita, could be unavailable in more than a month of next campaign owing to Africa Cup of Nations duty, Egypt has not given up on featuring him.

The Egyptian FA is hoping that the player will be able to persuade Liverpool to allow him to compete in the Olympics, and they expect a decision by the end of the week.

Kylian Mbappe’s transfer request

According to reports, Kylian Mbappe has requested to leave Paris Saint-Germain.

Transfer news surrounding the France World Cup winner have been widespread for months, with just two names frequently reported as being in the running for his signature: Liverpool and Real Madrid.

According to Marca, RMC Sport’s Daniel Riolo claims that Mbappe has informed PSG of his desire to leave.

He said: “I know that Mbappe asked to leave, but it is complicated because first you have to find a club that has the money to pay him, but the news is that he really does not want to stay.

“The player does not believe in Leonardo’s project. If he does not leave this summer, it will be for free next season. And in Doha [the capital of Qatar where PSG’s owners are based] they do not want to hear about it.

“If Mbappe expresses this desire to leave, it means that he will have to find a club and that PSG will need to look for a replacement.

“But yes, the news is that Mbappe does not want to stay at PSG.”

The Mbappe camp, including his father Wilfried, has reportedly been in contact with Jurgen Klopp in the past, but the Liverpool manager has publicly acknowledged that the sums required in a prospective deal to bring the teenager to Anfield could be expensive.

However, Klopp stated in November 2019 that a Liverpool deal for Mbappe would be impossible.

He said: “We cannot do it, it is as easy as that. OK, from a sporting point of view, there are not a lot of reasons to not sign him, what a player he is.

“But it is about the money of course. No chance. Absolutely no chance, sorry for killing that story!”
