Fabian Schar’s current contract expires at the end of the season, and Eddie Howe wants to tie him down to a new deal.

The Magpies boss, according to The Athletic, is interested in extending the contract of the Swiss international at the club, with Schar’s present contract at Newcastle set to expire at the end of this season, earning about £40,000 a week.

Since Howe’s appointment, Schar has emerged as a key player of Newcastle’s defence, playing all but one Premier League match for the Englishman as the Toon’s form and defence have improved considerably.

With the player’s deal due to expire in the summer, it’s understandable that the Newcastle manager wants to keep the 30-year-old, even if he’s certain to be replaced in next season’s starting lineup.

It looks like this summer will be a busy one for Newcastle as Eddie Howe sets out his strategy to propel the Magpies to the top of the Premier League table.

Even if Schar isn’t a starter in Newcastle’s starting lineup next season, signing the centre-back to an extension of his contract is a wise move by the northeast club.

A new deal for Schar at Newcastle is in the works as a result of his recent efforts that have kept the Toon out of the bottom three of the Premier League table.

Despite the fact that the defender may not be a starter next season, Schar deserves a better deal at Newcastle because of his excellent record this season and his ability to fill in for injuries and cup tournaments.
