President Jean-Pierre Caillot has confirmed that Hugo Ekitike will depart Stade Reims this summer.

Newcastle had an offer accepted for the French player on January deadline day, but he chose to finish the season in France.

With Eddie Howe’s team having won 10 games since the start of the year, a move for Ekitike may be revived.

The Magpies have been given the go-ahead by Reims president Caillot, according to  Europe 1 (via Get French Football News).

“In Hugo’s case, he would waste time staying with us.

“We refused an offer of €35million (£29m) this winter, which is a lot of money for a club like ours.

“That money will be used to grow and improve the club. Hugo will be allowed to go, and he’s probably going to leave.

“There wasn’t a big club that didn’t inquire for him.”

Due to a hamstring injury, Ekitike has only played four times in 2022. He has nine goals in 21 games this season.

Despite not having played since December, Callum Wilson remains Newcastle’s leading scorer with six goals, and the club are expected to be in the market for a striker this summer.
