Before the summer transfer market closes next month, Newcastle United still has some work to do.
The English-managed Magpies, coached by Eddie Howe, are hoping to maintain the outstanding play that saw them finish the previous season’s campaign strongly.
The Geordies are on track to surpass their 11th-place finish from the previous season after defeating Nottingham Forest 2-0 at home on the opening weekend of the new 2022–23 campaign.
The Toon will likely sign one more player before the summer transfer window closes at the beginning of next month, though, in order to continue their remarkable turnaround after their bumper takeover nearly 12 months ago.
According to recent reports, Anthony Gordon of Everton is one name that is high on their shopping list.
According to a recent article in The Athletic, sporting director Dan Ashworth has been in contact with the 21-year-old quick-footed winger to discuss a possible signing.
A snippet from the outlet’s report said: “Although there has been no dramatic shift in Newcastle’s priorities, he [Ashworth] has led calls to other clubs, speaking to Everton about Anthony Gordon and dealing with Leicester City over James Maddison.”
Given their strong negotiation position and the fact that Gordon, 21, still has three years left on his contract at Goodison Park, it would be a great shock if Frank Lampard’s Toffees approved a transfer.
