Nottingham Forest now ‘very interested’ in 26-year-old defensive midfielder – Journalist
Jhegson Mendez is a target for Nottingham Forest and other European clubs who want to sign him this summer.
The Ecuadorian midfielder featured in two games at the World Cup before he was suspended for the last one.
South American football reporter Joaquin Saavedra claims that Forest are interested in Mendez.
The Reds want to boost their squad this summer and a defensive midfielder is one of their priorities.
Mendez currently plays for Sao Paulo in Brazil. He joined them from Orlando City in the MLS and he has had a varied career path, despite being only 26-years-old.
Forest have also been linked with Ibrahim Sangare this summer. He seems to be the preferred option for the defensive midfield role but Mendez could be another alternative for the Reds.
Mendez has 36 caps for his country. He would be a bit of a mystery signing but he has come from the well-known Independiente academy so he should not be overlooked.
It is intriguing that Forest are keen on Mendez this summer and it shows where the recruitment team want to improve.
Several defensive midfielders are being mentioned as possible signings for Forest this summer. With Cheikhou Kouyate likely to leave for Saudi Arabia and Remo Freuler not needed, it makes sense.
Steve Cooper will want to have a strong squad for next season. Several players will have to go but adding a defensive midfielder like Mendez could be a good move for Forest.
Rumour rating: 5/10 – We can’t give more than that because we don’t know much about him.
As with any player who comes from South America, there will be a period of adjustment. How he settles and adapts at the City Ground could determine the success or failure of this potential deal.
