Maik Nawrocki hasn’t yet been written out of the Celtic squad for Ibrox on September 3.
Late on Monday night a report in The Sun explained that the former Legia Warsaw man had picked up a hamstring injury in the defeat at Kilmarnock on Sunday that would rule him out of the first Glasgow Derby of the season.
There hasn’t been much good news around recently for Celtic fans but there was a little bit of hope in a report that appeared in the Daily Record from Scott Burns:
Brendan Rodgers faces a sweat over Maik Nawrocki ahead of the Rangers clash – as Celtic’s defensive problems continue to pile up. The Polish defender has suffered a hamstring injury and was sent for a scan on Monday.
Nawrocki is now likely to be sidelined for a couple of weeks. He is likely to sit out of Saturday’s home clash with St Johnstone and could be touch and go for the trip to Rangers the following weekend, depending on how he responded to treatment.
It is another unwanted blow for the Hoops after Kilmarnock knocked the holders out of the Viaplay Cup at the weekend. Recent signing from Legia Warsaw Nawrocki finished the game but then had his injury assessed.
Celtic are already struggling in terms of central defensive options, with new arrival Gustaf Lagerbielke the only one fit out of Rodgers’ first four.
Going for a scan and being touch and go for the Ibrox match is about as close to good news as it gets for Rodgers who will be without Stephen Welsh for three or four months with no timeline given for the return of Carter-Vickers.
Before Sunday’s match Rodgers sounded reluctant about signing another central defender but may have to think again about that stance.
Signing a free agent on a short term deal or bringing in a highly rated prospect on loan are two options that will have to be considered while Celtic’s early season form has highlighted the need to bring in some first team ready signings.
Although there is some breathing space after Ibrox created by the international break Celtic will be in Champions League action in just under one month.
Rodgers will have to decide between Liam Scales and Tomoki Iwata to play alongside Gustaf Lagerbielke for Saturday’s match at home to St Johnstone.
