Rafa Benitez is reportedly considering a surprise loan swap with Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino, according to Italian outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Vecino, 30, is a backup player at Inter. This season, the veteran Uruguay player has only appeared 15 times for Simone Inzaghi.

The former Fiorentina star’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he is expected to leave. It’ll be interesting to watch if that happens in the January window.

Everton, on the other hand, could make a move for Inter’s midfielder. However, according to Gazzetta, Everton’s acquisition of Vecino could be a swap transaction.

Lucas Digne, an ostracized left-back, is a target for Inter. However, Inter will only be able to do so if he is signed on a loan-to-obligation agreement.

The Toffees, who are thought to prefer a sale this month, are unlikely to be enticed by such a move. Benitez may be enticed if Vecino is loaned out.

The only difference is that they will still receive a respectable sum for Digne. Meanwhile, Vecino’s deal expires in the summer.

So, while Everton supporters may feel they are sacrificing one of their finest stars for a midfielder who is significantly less expensive than Digne, the club will not be losing money.

Instead, Inter will have to wait until the summer to pay up. In exchange, they sign Vecino on loan, with the possibility of having him on a free in summer.
