Rafael Benitez has stated that he intends to recruit a number 10 in the coming months.
The Spaniard spoke to Sky Sports about his present options and confessed that he does not have a natural No 10 position.
He did agree, though, that getting a good price for an offensive midfielder is difficult, but it is evident that he is keen to add one to his side.
He said: “We have some players who can play in this position, but we don’t have a specialist.
“We can play [Demarai] Gray; we can play [Alex] Iwobi or [Andros] Townsend. They can play there, but they are not specialists in this position.
“When you think of the No 10 and look at those who back in the day wore the number – you think of Pele, Maradona so usually a really good, high-quality player who plays in this position. We’re maybe sometimes looking for this kind of player, but it’s not easy to find anyone in the market. At least at a good price.”
Given Everton’s current financial situation, signing a new attacking midfielder seems doubtful.
However, considering that Donny van de Beek has been connected with a loan move, you’d think he could be the player Benitez is looking for [ESPN].
Aaron Ramsey, who the Italian giants Juventus are willing to allow depart on a free transfer [Calciomercato], has also been linked with the Toffees.
Both of those players would be terrific signings to this Everton squad and could give Benitez precisely what he wants.
So it’ll be interesting to watch what happens in January, as it’s evident that Benitez is looking for a new offensive midfielder.
With the Toffees’ current squad, this kind of recruitment may help them climb the table, and either Ramsey or van de Beek would be fantastic additions.
