Rangers, who are currently in a tight race to defend their first Scottish Premier League title in 10 years, took a hard blow when Steven Gerrard’s move to the EPL was announced.
After a week of extensive searching and talks, the Gers seem to have settled on Dutchman Giovanni Bronckhorst as Gerrard’s replacement.
The former Feyenoord coach has been out of managerial action since December, when he resigned from Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R & F. According to reports, the 46-year old former midfielder has almost finalized a deal to move to Ibrox.
In a Wednesday night tweet, TalkSport journalist Jim White revealed the news. “Just had it confirmed that @RangersFC and representatives of Giovanni van Bronckhorst are close to finalizing a deal which will see the Dutchman become the club’s new manager,” read the tweet.
Formerly a player at Rangers, Giovanni will (if appointed) look to lead his side to the glory days they had during his player days there, when they won back-to-back titles, among them domestic doubles and trebles.
Having managed Feyenoord to a first domestic league title in 18 years (2017), he’s capable enough to pick up where Gerrard left off, and help Rangers successfully defend their title. Everything has not been finalized yet, though, and it’s still not certain that Bronckhorst will move to Ibrox, so it’s a wait and see.
