According to Football Scotland, Tom Lawrence is expected to be officially introduced as a Rangers player this weekend as Giovanni van Bronckhorst gets closer to finalising his second summer deal.
The Welshman left Pride Park on a free transfer at the end of June, prompting the Gers to step up their pursuit. He captained Derby County last season during the Rams’ most challenging season.
Rangers want to close this deal as quickly as possible, so the 28-year-old has already had all the required medical examinations and passed them with flying colours.
The player was interested in a move to Bramall Lane before Rangers, according to Yorkshire Live, and the Light Blues defeated English Championship club Sheffield United to sign him.
Lawrence is not likely to travel to Portugal with van Bronckhorst and his team for their preseason training camp; rather, he will join the group once they arrive in Glasgow.
The Welsh international scored many of Derby’s goals last campaign as he guided them to a valiant fight against relegation after a 21-point deduction left them facing an uphill battle.
He is more aware than most of how much effort is required to achieve a goal, and van Bronckhorst has to teach that quality to his team after they just missed winning the Premier League title and the Europa League last season.
