One of Antonio Conte’s former players has been linked to a move to Tottenham this week.
According to Spanish media reports, the Lilywhites are willing to pay a significant sum for Inter Milan center-back Alessandro Bastoni in order to bolster their defence for the upcoming season.
The 52-year-old manager is said to be a huge admirer of the 22-year-old midfielder, and Spurs have reportedly made an offer of around €50 million (£42 million).
Ever since he took over in 2nd November last year, Antonio Conte has relied heavily on his standard three-man defence, but he could use another option in the form of full-back Ben Davies, who has played alongside Eric Dier and Cristian Romero.
As a result, the role calls for a replacement, and there aren’t many better candidates than Bastoni, whom Conte appears to admire greatly.
After making 33 appearances, the 6-foot-3 colossus averaged 1.2 interceptions and one tackle per game during the team’s season. With a new coaching staff, he’s made even more progress, averaging 1.5 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game this season from 27 games played.
Some have compared the Italy international to his Euro 2020-winning teammate, veteran Leonardo Bonucci.
“He controls the opponent, space and with a refinement that has rarely been seen, reminds me of a young Bonucci,” said Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti.
