In a career spanning over fifteen years for his country since debuting in February 2005, Steven Davis has surely made his mark given the number of times he has appeared for the Northern Ireland side, which he currently captains.

Going into yesterday’s game against Bulgaria, Davis already held 129 international caps, a record for a Rangers FC player. Davis holds a massive 130 caps, which could stand for a long time for both club and country.

The Northern Ireland captain led his side to a 2-1 defeat away against Bulgaria, a performance that dashed their 2022 World Cup hopes despite his side still having two games to play. After Northern Ireland’s defeat, it’s now confirmed that Group C will see either Italy or Switzerland, who are equal on points, head directly to next year’s World Cup.

Fighting to get a win that would have kept Northern Ireland’s hopes alive, Davis and his teammates came out short against the Bulgarians as the Irish men wasted scoring chances in the first half. These errors allowed Bulgaria to come back stronger and get a win as their opponents didn’t have an answer to Todor Nedelev’s brace.

Northern Ireland have had a poor run the past year or two and Steven Davis won’t captain his team to the most coveted football cup in history, but the 36-year old still boasts a British and club record for most capped international player.

The former Southampton man will most probably pocket his 131st and 132nd caps when his nation hosts Lithuania and Italy in their two remaining Group C matches, and he will hopefully impress like he did in 2016 when his two goals sent Northern Ireland to their first ever European Championship finals.
