Going into the new season, David Moyes aimed to put together a squad that could survive the demands of the Europa League. And it appears that he has done exactly that.
It would be fair to say that every first-team signing West Ham have made has competed at some stage in Europe’s top competition, whether it be the Champions League or the Europa League. French international Kurt Zouma is not only one of them, but also a former Champions League winner.
The Frenchman is a significant upgrade over Craig Dawson, who has been the frequent starter for West Ham this season, while Croatian Nikola Vlasic and Czech Republic’s Alex Kral provide much-needed depth and competition in midfield.
The signing of Alphonse Areola will keep Fabianksi on his toes as he was last season the undisputed number one, as well as having injuries problems.
Michail Antonio is the only one with a gaping hole behind him. If additional injuries occur this summer, Moyes’ belief that he can utilize Jarrod Bowen through the middle will be tested.
