The Athletic have reported that West Ham United are close to completing the signing of goalkeeper Alphonse Areola permanently.

Areola spent the 2021/22 season on loan with the Hammers and took responsibility  as primary keeper in cup and European competition.

A permanent stay offer for the Frenchman has been on the table for weeks. The London Stadium club  had triggered the permanent option in his loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain and were ready for a deal with  £11million for his signature.

There was a twist in Areola’s permanent switch to West Ham United after Newcastle United had also developed an interest in the goalkeeper, but as reported, West Ham are finalising on his permanent move.

In his Wednesday morning report (22 June), The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas said: “A second acquisition seems imminent with West Ham close to finalising the permanent signing of Alphonse Areola.”

“West Ham had the option to re-sign the French international on loan for next season or activate the £11 million clause.”

“They have decided to do the latter and are close to completing the deal, despite the goalkeeper having late interest from Newcastle United.”

Preferred Premier League starter Lukasz Fabianski is still in David Moyes’ plans at West Ham, but at 37, Areola is tipped to be promoted in due course.

He made a single top-flight appearance but had 16 cup outings with the Hammers.
