Due to their dominance in the Premiership, Celtic may end up paying more for VAR than any other club in Scotland.
Why? Because reports claim that if VAR is implemented in Scotland, it will be paid for through league position-dependent contributions.
According to the BBC, if Celtic win the title, they will contribute 16.29% of the total. This represents a 4.62 percent fee over the price paid by the runner-ups.
According to the report, the league’s last-place team will only be required to contribute 5.63 percent. As a result, payments can vary by up to 10.66%.
On April 19th, all clubs from the Premiership down to League 2 are scheduled to vote. For this to happen, 75 percent of Premier League and Championship clubs must agree.Leagues 1 and 2 must also have a majority of 75% to approve it.
According to the Daily Mail, VAR in Scotland has previously been estimated to cost clubs around the £100,000 mark each. The total cost of all of this would be around £1.2 million. If Celtic had to pay 16.29 percent of the total, it would be on the hook for around £195k.
In light of how little others could contribute, Celtic’s payment of just under £200k is a bit disappointing. However, the Hoops, along with Rangers, are clearly pushing for VAR.
